Waters of Wonder – Whale Watching in Lahaina

Here, amid the sanctuaries of sun, earth and palms, such a beautiful symphony of life speaks to Spirit. The surface of the seas ahead may be nothing but a sapphire blue color, but underneath there is a world. Have you ever seen a white ghost appear on the far-off horizon? Here, even though lightyears might pass between our tranquil sea and powerful land, it is as if Artists set a piece of art within Lahaina. What is it like to go on a whale tour while you are here?

The towering pine-clad ridges of the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley stretch over your head and you sit on a tour boat” feeling like a kid in front of an incredibly fascinating teacher. Our guide is talking all the time about how that whale has been on everybody‘s mind all along. At last, suddenly somebody cries: “There she blows!” The curtain rises on this ocean’s opera. If you thought marlin fishing was interesting, just attend nature’s great performance!

The captains of these boats, who have perhaps lived almost as long on salt water as they have on earth, know these waters as if they were their bedroom. They know how to lead you to places where these beautiful monsters really often are. It is not guess-work; it is exacting art. Beside them in their wake, you find yourself obeying their well-practiced instincts until you have unforgettable animal encounters too. Picture the acclaim when a humpback whale suddenly bursts out of the water, hanging there suspended apparently without weight, and free. Mother Nature gives you a front-row seat to her show. Slapdash all around; eyes growing wide with surprise. Sky turns from cobalt blue into a heavenly rosy hue, the perfect color scheme for disaster. And out of the sound of children screaming and laughing around them comes a chorus that is more enchanting than any other in the world.

Right now you are Living a National Geographic Dream with a touch of Jacques Cousteau movie. Cameras go wild, trying to capture too much for just one frame.

Though you may be in uncharted territory as far as the sea goes, never fear. The locals have a million and one tricks for steering those wild waves well within reach–like an old hand who knows them through and through. You soon find yourself riding a crest confidently, like now that’s just the way things are in nature. Then if you are lucky enough to witness such an event, listen closely and you can hear the eerie song of the whales echoing through the waters. The sea hums its music; a natural lullaby which lulls you softly to sleep.

As the sunsets behind the hazy islands, soaking the sky in peaches and apricots as though you’ve only caught the end of an incredible daydream at sea: every second is preserved onto film. Whale tours in Lahaina are not just excursions; they are probably verifiable docent narratives being performed for you by the wind and waves of the Pacific. However, as the twinkling lights on the quay begin to guide you back home at Lahaina Harbor, what other choice is there but to get off the boat?
